VANCOUVER—"I loved it. It was amazing. You just can really grasp the feeling of their culture in their performance. It was more than what I expected it to be — very exciting."

This is how Wanda Hurtubise described the Chinese Spectacular, the world-renowned Chinese cultural show currently playing at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey.

Hurtibise attended the Spectacular with her 19-year-old son, Brock Taylor, a lover of all things Asian.

"It was very inspiring," said Taylor. "It really brought out the tradition of the Chinese culture."

Taylor, who has been interested in and researching Asian culture for nine years, says that regarding China, it's the purity and profundity of the ancient traditions that attract him.

"I don't know the word, and I've always wondered about it, but it's the honor, the way and how of their lifestyle and the traditions, very structured, the culture. I just have such an interest in that."

Taylor added that he could see the essence of the values that the ancients lived by portrayed in the Spectacular.

"That's why it brings me to where I am today. It keeps my heart strong to what happens in this world nowadays…to keep those honors. These shows inspire and I think that everyone should come to see this [show]."

Hurtibise said she's watched DVDs from her son's collection about "the way of life in the dynasties" and that she was pleased to see this portrayed through the ancient legends depicted in the Spectacular.

"[The Chinese culture] is being kept alive I was really excited about that as well, to see that in their performance. It was like…to see that performed alive today was exciting," she said.

"I've never been to anything like this so this was very exciting for me."

After traveling to over 60 countries on four continents, the New York-based Divine Performing Arts will wind up the Canadian leg of its 2008 international tour with shows in Calgary from April 30-May 2, and in Edmonton from May 5-7.
