VANCOUVER—The first performance of Divine Performing Arts of New York (DPA) Chinese Spectacular in Vancouver received a warm welcome in the Bell Performing Arts Center. David, an immigrant from mainland China who wished to keep his surname private, said that it is "so exciting" to see authentic Chinese classical dance overseas.
David, who has been training in Chinese classical dance since his youth, commented that the performance is very "natural and pure," without any "business atmosphere".
"I grew up in the environment of Chinese classical dance, I have a very deep experience of that [Chinese classical dance]. In my understanding, the soul of Chinese classical dance is to speak with the dance movement, and I feel that from today's performance," David said.
David also said that the performance delivered its message to the audience with "a very real human language, a very beautiful language."
"Just by their movement, people can receive that beautiful information. DPA artists have very solid training."
David said that he like the Tang dynasty dance and music the most, especially the Drummers of the Tang Court, because it fully expresses the "mighty spirit of Tang Dynasty men."
"It is a rare chance for people to see the authentic Chinese classical dance, I still saw it when I was yang, and it disappeared gradually when I grew up, it is a surprise to see it again in Canada. It gives me a feeling of returning to one's true nature, returning to one's natural beauty, a pure feeling." said David.
