BRISBANE, Australia—The opening night of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at the Brisbane Convention Centre on April 7 treated the audience to "real Chinese culture", according to audience member Joe Fuller.
Mr Fuller, a public servant from the Gold Coast, said he is very interested in Chinese culture and has been to China many times. He enjoyed the colour and spectacle of the show. "I probably thought it would be more like gymnastics, but this is their real culture. [I] really enjoyed it, you know."
Mr Fuller's favourite performance was the Baritone, Qu Yue, who sang 'Truth Alone Sets you Free'. He said: "…probably because of my age, I appreciated the song he sang [the lyrics]. I say [to people], things have changed and they say: 'Oh, it's only because you are an oldie.'…No one cares any more. That song portrayed to me what our era feels like. It is interesting to see another culture, another world still believes what we do."
When asked what he would tell his friends about the Spectacular, he said: "I would tell them it's more of the classical ballet and the true story, rather than the normal Chinese thing — which is normally the acrobats."
