MELBOURNE, Australia—Huw Slater, member and former secretary of the Australian Tibet Council thinks all Australians should see the Chinese Spectacular.
"I'd definitely recommend seeing the show, if just to widen your perspective a little bit. I think it's important to expose yourself to a lot of different depictions of culture, and to experience this show would definitely be a good idea for all Australians, I think.
"The show was great, there is obviously a lot of skill from the performers, a lot of the dancers were very evocative, I think, and certainly showed an aspect of Chinese culture which you don't usually get which I found very good.
"It was really good to see some performances that evoked an aspect of Chinese culture which is a bit taboo to see in a lot of forums, and I guess to get another perspective which is important, I think. Especially in such an extremely diverse and culturally rich place as China.
"What came home was certainly being able to see how a culture is actually practiced in China. And its ability to be performed in ways which are not choreographed by government choreographers and people who have a vested interest in wanting to depict Chinese culture in the way the government wants to, and I think that's really important.
"Obviously, those themes reflected in the dances, which have relevance to contemporary China, in that this kind of culture is not able to be practiced freely in China, and I thought it was really important that some of those themes came through in the dances," Mr. Slater said.
