NEW YORK—Brooklyn teacher Yan Long says he found solace in the spiritual themes of the Chinese New Year Splendor on Tuesday at Radio City Music Hall.
"I have never seen anything like this. The show is wonderful. It is spectacular," he said.
Yan said the performance with the Buddhist temple was "marvelous," and the performance that highlighted the role of communism in China was "interesting because it shows how sad the Cultural Revolution was and still is."
Yan could not choose a favorite performance.
"I loved the drums so much. We have drums in our blood—to experience drums like that was overwhelming.
"The 'Water Sleeves' were wonderful, and the water nymphs ['Nymphs of the Sea'] were excellent. The dancers are so coordinated, so wonderful, it's amazing. I am so glad I came," he said.
Yan also enjoyed the music and singing.
"The orchestra has Western and Asian instruments—that makes everything sparkle. Since I am Western, I think it is a right combination.
"The Erhu, [a two-stringed Chinese violin] it is unbelievable that such sound comes out of that," he said.
Yan liked the Chinese opera too. "The tenor was fantastic. What a voice!"
"My only problem with it is that I think the acts, the dances, should be twice as long. They seem so marvelous. They put so much effort, so I think it should last longer."
Yan liked the digital backgrounds that supplemented the show.
"On the background, it's so clever to put the graphics, they are so realistic and so artistic."
