Hal and Ina Friedman have had time to enjoy the good life since Ina sold her real estate business in Poughkeepise, New York last month. Having the additional leisure time led them to travel to New York City and to take in their first Divine Performing Arts show, the second performance of the Chinese New Splendor at Radio City Music Hall.
"Tremendous… Extremely moving too, I was surprised, really. I mean, I really got the feeling! And also, empathy for the whole culture, and what's going on [in contemporary China] shared Hal. "And also they did a magnificent job of portraying that and bringing it out, really. I mean, the talent was stupendous too!"
"I can't imagine the hours that went into it too, to have the show presented, and the timing of everyone dancing," added Ina. "Then the woman and that aspect with the children [in the performance called "The Power of Awareness"] ...you could feel how important that is."
Hal went on "Just the technical aspects too, the choreography and those backdrops, I mean, they're really awesome!"
When asked which backdrops she liked, Ina offered "they're all magnificent. I also liked the drumming, I mean that was really something to get everybody all together. And the beat! ...Nobody was out of step. It was like an orchestra of drums, that's what it seemed like to me."
In regards to the Divine Performing Arts combination of eastern and western instrumentation, Hal felt that "they blended so well, there was no harsh transition at all. It was very smooth… It was very difficult for me to make a distinction [between the two styles of instrumentation] because it blended so well."
Ina said that she would recommend the show for anyone. "For years I've gone to the Rockettes, for years I've gone to Radio City, and I wasn't quite sure how this would be presented, and it was presented better than I could have imagined." She went on to share that she appreciated that the lyrics to the vocalists songs were displayed on the backdrop as they performed.
When asked what kind of person would enjoy Chinese New Year Splendor , Hal shared: "I think someone would have to have some feelings of empathy or open mindedness or curiosity... its for practically everybody."
