SAN FRANCISCO—It was the last day of the Chinese New Year Spectacular at San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre, and the final two shows stunned audience members, both old and young alike.
Sandra Speights, who is a home stager, came from San Ramon. The reason she came to the show, she explained, is because her husband is Chinese, and she wanted to watch a Chinese show.
"Fabulous," she said. Speights revealed that she is also a painter, and appreciates the colors used in the shows.
"This is a great show for me because I've always wanted to learn about Chinese music and dance," said Lyuba Pivilina, a musician from Martinez, during the intermission.
Two sisters, Angela and Rachel Olmenson, came to the show, along with their mother Laura, who described the show as "pretty and elaborate."
They agreed that the Mongolian Bowl Dance was their favorite. "Although the Tang dynasty drums were great too," said Angela. "Their loudness really got my attention and kept me 'tuned in.'"
Tasha Beauchamp, a website designer from Sebastopol, says that she read about the Spectacular from the newspapers and wanted to take her brother to the show for a birthday celebration. During intermission, she announced that it was a wonderful way to celebrate.
"I really like the little stories within the dances…because you can learn about history through them." Tasha explained. She says that this was a delightful experience in many ways. "I want to learn more about Chinese music, art, and dance," Tasha added. "This is truly a spectacular!"
