With a mix of playfulness and solemnity, dancers dressed in costumes from China's various Dynasties expressed the timeless beauty of their culture. Whether from the soft fan dances or from the flowing cloth of the long sleeved dresses, an air of gentle grace filled the stage of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
"It's very colorful and different," said audience member, Kelly Zanjen, owner of a Koi pond business in San Diego. I thought that a lot of the motions were very interesting because they're so different than those of ballet. The Chinese dance movements are very different from anything I've ever seen. Combined with the acrobatics, it was very interesting."
Showcasing classical Chinese dance, the Spectacular brings to Western audiences a rare jewel of flowing, yet intricate movement.
"I got to see a lot of different dances and such that I've never seen before. It introduced something new that I had never experienced," said Marla Williams, a caregiver in San Diego.
"It's beautiful; beautiful colors, it's incredibly choreographed, and music," said Williams, "There's a lot of talent, with a very peaceful and relaxed environment. It's been a great experience and I definitely plan to come again next year."
The 2008 Chinese New Year Spectacular will next stop at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Friday, Jan. 18 - Sunday, Jan. 20, followed by the Orpheum Theatre of San Francisco on Jan. 23.
