OTTAWA—Launching the Canadian portion of its 2008 world tour, the Divine Performing Arts opened the Chinese New Year Spectacular Sunday night at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
"Be aware that this is a show that is absolutely beyond belief. Absolutely beautiful," exclaimed Joan Blagder after watching the performance with her family.
Showcasing China's 5,000 years of culture, the New York-based Divine Performing Arts is set to dazzle Canadian audiences in 20 shows with its portrayal of traditional Chinese arts.
Featuring performances of Chinese classical dance, a unique and broad art form that places great emphasis on both the technique and "inner spirit" of the dancers, the Spectacular re-enacts traditional myths and legends in a way that is untainted by any elements of Chinese communist culture.
The music in the Divine Performing Arts Spectacular is also unique in that it is a classical western orchestra that features traditional Chinese instruments, creating its own distinct sound.

"I've seen many shows in my days but I've never seen anything quite this elegant," said Blagder, adding that "the drumming was magnificent—it was really spectacular."
Since 2004, Divine Performing Arts has been reviving China's ancient traditions, playing in some of the world's most prestigious venues. By the end of its tour, the show will have played to a total live audience of over 650,000 in more than 60 cities.
The Spectacular plays one more show in Ottawa Monday night before moving on to Montreal and Toronto. Upon its return to Canada in the spring, the show will play in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
