NEW YORK—Two Sikh students who attend public schools in Queens were assaulted in within five days of each other in June.
On June 9, 12 year-old Gurprit Kaur, who attends P.S. 219 in Flushing, had her hair cut off by a fellow student. The long hair of Sikhs has spiritual and religious importance, and Sikhs considers cutting their hair a sin. The student who cut Kaur's hair was suspended.
Five days earlier, Jagmohan Singh Premi, a student at Richmond Hill High School, was punched in the face after a fellow student tried to take off his turban.
The parents of Kaur and Singh Premi and the Sikh Coalition marched on June 30 in Queens in protest of harassment against Sikhs in public schools.
