NEW YORK—Executives from the building and construction industry announced today at City Hall the creation of a privately funded construction safety group.
The 17-member New York City Construction Industry Safety Council (CISC) will bring construction managers and contractors together to share their best practices and procedures and utilize the expertise of engineers, academics, equipment manufacturers, union officials, the New York Department of Buildings and Occupational Safety, and Health Administration officials.
"New York is a world-class city and deserves world-class safety standards," said Louis J. Coletti, president and CEO of the Building Trades Employers' Association (BTEA), the city's largest contractor association representing 1,500 construction company members.
"Through the CISC we will take the lead to identify, develop and implement the best public and worker safety standards and practices in the world," she said.
CISC aims to encourage the sharing of safe building practices among its members, research construction safety practices used in other regions and their possible application in New York City, and urge relevant government agencies to establish construction safety standards.
Founding members of the CISC includes the city's leading high-rise contractors, their respective contractor associations, the Building and Construction Trades Council of New York, and the Real Estate Board of New York.
