On Tuesday Polish president Lech Kaczynski in an interview with Polish daily newspaper Dziennik said, "For the moment, the question of the [Lisbon] treaty is pointless".

Even though Poland's parliament has ratified it, in accordance with their constitution it has to be signed by the president in order to take effect.

To the question of how other European countries are pressuring the Irish government to find a solution to the no vote of last months referendum, he replied that the rule of unanimity must be kept and no country can be forced to accept the Lisbon Treaty, "If one breaks the rule of unanimity one time, it will never exist again," he said.

He explained that once that rule of unanimous decisions is broken, it will set a precedent for the future.

He said he would re-consider his decision only if other countries including Ireland change their decision in relation to the treaty.

Lech Kaczynski emphasized that in the case of Ireland he will accept only the sovereign decision of Ireland, made without pressure being placed by other European countries.

However, the president did say he thought the EU would carry on working. "Certainly it isn't ideal, but a structure this complicated couldn't be ideal. There is no treaty but EU still exists", he said. By opposing treaty ratification Mr Kaczynski has joined his Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus and many lawmakers, do not want to sign the treaty while its future is still uncertain.
