SANTA MONICA−A spirited and intelligent play, written and directed by David Bridel, brings you into the rise and fall of the legendary 16th century Commedia troupe, in the world premiere of I Gilosi at The Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica. Employing a cleverly simple set design, the story is told of the troupe from Milan Italy who, in 1569, gain notoriety when they break with custom by including a woman, the brilliant, beautiful and witty, Isabella Andreini, to perform with them. With noble patronage, they find themselves entertaining at the court of Henri III of France.
Tensions mount, however, threatening the troupe when the motivations of the various players begin to clash with one another.
Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble brings to life these diverse characters who all seek for different rewards from their life on stage; including fame, food, poetry, love, rebellion, and revenge.
"I found the story of the Gelosi irresistible," says Bridal, "I've always been fascinated by the conflicting ambitions, rivalries, and love affairs that lie beneath the surface of artistry and glamour in the theater company, and I've always loved the highly theatrical, explosive, celebratory form of the theater known as Commedia dell'Arte."
The play, though a bit too long, tackles some fundamental questions about art and responsibility and moral conviction; Is art merely for entertainment, or does the artist have deeper responsibilities? What is the responsibility of governments or rulers to their subjects, and those who fight, risking their lives on their behalf, as depicted with The Holy wars of Pope Gregory? This play and story line seem particularly poignant and relevant today.
