Currently if you detonate a nuclear bomb in Ireland you will only be subject to a €5000 fine or a twelve month jail sentence because of anomalies in legislation introduced in 2006.

The short comings in the legislation pointed out by the opposition have sent the government scurrying to amend the anomolies.

Opposition spokesperson on local government, Deputy Ciaran Lynch said, "I welcome the response of the Minister's commitment to remove the crazy provisions within the legislation such as the twelve month jail sentence or a €5,000 fine.

"Were the bill to proceed we would have had the balmy idea as originally suggested by Minister Gormley whereby this serious offence would be treated as minor."
