BANGKOK—Police pushed and shoved protesters in Bangkok on Friday as thousands of demonstrators began a march in Thailand's capital to oust the government.

The crowd moved up to a police barricade where they briefly faced off with a phalanx of riot police five-deep, before sitting down in the middle of a road near the government's headquarters.

The government has vowed to stop the protesters, whose four-week campaign has increased political tensions at a time of stuttering economic growth and soaring inflation.
