DMONTON—The Divine Performing Arts concluded its 2008 world tour on Wednesday night, playing the last of three Chinese Spectacular shows in Edmonton's Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
"The [dance] routines are enjoyable. I enjoyed the drumming and the gymnastics [in the dance]. I enjoyed the big group formal dance. I guess that covers the whole show doesn't it," said Ron Yustak, laughing, during the intermission.
Yustak, who is retired but used to work in sales, noted that the show carries a message about the suppression of freedom of belief in China.
"It does cover the message in what's happening in the world today. Falun Gong for instance, it's terrible that religion can't be looked at as a religion and not be persecuted," he said.
Two acts in the show depict Falun Gong and its guiding principles of Truth, Compassion and Tolerance. Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a spiritual practice rooted in ancient Chinese culture. It is currently being suppressed by the Chinese communist regime.
Yustak also felt the Spectacular was unique, adding that he especially enjoyed the solo by soprano Jiang Min.
"It's very unique. The costumes are very different. The Asian type of dress in different eras, it's enjoyable to see. The female vocalist was just fantastic. The baritone was good, but I thought the female vocalist was just extraordinary.
