EDMONTON—Ancient legends, classical Chinese dance, and folk instruments have not lost their charm after thousands of years as shown in the performance of The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular Wednesday evening May 7 when they completed their final performance to a standing ovation at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. The DPA has just completed its 2008 global tour where it performed on five continents and to 650,000 audience members.
Garnet Sanford, a cleaner, loved the show. He returned from China around four years ago where he studied Mandarin, and wants to go back.
“Chinese history and art, I go back about four years and I’m still learning about it. Learning about a lot of things with them. To see the performance… oh, it was a whole new scenery for me.” he said.
Sanford saw the show for the first time at Wednesday evening’s performance. “I like live performances because something is there. I just decided to go right to it. My sister wanted to see it so I decided to bring her along with me too. It worked out pretty good.”
‘It was uplifting and very spiritual’
Morris Suboght who works as a security guard also commented on the show: ‘It was beautiful. It was very imaginative, very colourful. The choreographer, the dancers, just brilliant.”
When asked what his favourite performances were Suboght reflected and commented that it was “The Mongolian ones… ['Mongolian Bowl Dance'] and ['Chopstick Zest']. It touched me in different ways. It felt really good. It arrests you in different ways.”
Suboght thought the message in the show was very well done. “It was uplifting. It was very spiritual”. He felt that the message was: “To be more compassionate to your fellow brothers and sisters. Definitely to spread joy and goodwill. We are all connected… we are all one.”
“I definitely will come back next year,” he said.
