EDMONTON, Canada—Amber Craig, a nurse from Edmonton said she enjoyed the Spectacular , and its depiction of Chinese culture.

She said that her understanding was that the Spectacular aimed to show the “story of the culture of the Chinese people”.

She added that she felt they were showing, “How much they love each other, and how much respect they have for one another. The way that they face each other, the way that they bow to each other—their facial expressions.

“I felt sad at some points and I felt love. And I felt sadness when the one girl was getting beaten but then the joy that she was being released when she went up to her gods [‘The Risen Lotus Flower.’] I've been in China. We went to some Buddhist temples and I've been in South East Asia, so I've seen different kinds of Chinese culture.

“I find that it's very sad that they can't share [aspects of their culture] with their own people. But it's nice that rest of the world can see that they can put it into art or play that people can understand.”

She said she was surprised by the voices of the singers.

“The voices of the two singers, how far their voice can carry and how long they can hold a note. You would never think that someone singing in Chinese could actually sound like Italian Opera. It sounded very good. A very good response.

“Then when she held her note—it kind of gave me shivers because it was really powerful.” She recommends the show to friends and family.

Also she said that she loved the dancing. “I didn't realize that Chinese dance was actually that much work,” she said. She thought some parts of it were like ballet, and praised the physical fitness of the performers.

Her favorite performance was an act called ‘Nymphs of the Sea’: “The colors were very pretty and they were using their fans to make the ocean waves… It is spectacular.”

And what did Mrs Craig think the Chinese Spectacular was ultimately about? “Love, basically and peace.”
