EDMONTON—The Divine Performing Arts' Chinese Spectacular brought Edmonton's Jubilee Auditorium to life on Tuesday evening with its portrayal of myths and legends from ancient China.
"It's very vibrant, very colourful, certainly a lot of tradition. It was eye-opening for me because I haven't seen anything like this before," said Scott Cassels, an account executive for Global Television.
"This is unlike anything I've seen before. The color and the costumes are so elaborate that there is really nothing to compare it to what I've seen. I was quite taken with it."
What impressed Cassels was "the pageantry of it, the elaborate dance, the elaborate costuming. The music especially was something like I had never heard before."
"I was admittedly a little apprehensive coming. I had no idea what to expect really. Once you get here it is a whole different experience."
Cassels, who said he really enjoyed the drumming pieces and the Orchestra, was also impressed by the Chinese classical dance — something the show has become renowned for.
"The movements were similar to ballet, but they were certainly a different presentation. You can see elements of ballet and other dances in the show, but it is presented in a different way that I haven't seen."
"This show would be something I would recommend to other people to check out."
The New York-based Divine Performing Arts is winding up the Canadian leg of its international with three shows Edmonton from May 5-7.
In its 2008 tour, the Divine Performing Arts staged 220 shows in over 14 countries on four continents, reaching a total live audience of about 650,000.
