Bord Scannan na hEireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) has made a proposal for a new Irish TV channel dedicated to broadcasting the best of world cinema to the Department of Communications, energy and nature resources. The proposal will be included in the new broadcasting bill launched by Minister Eamonn Ryan.
The proposed new channel will give Irish audiences an opportunity to view independent Irish, European and world cinema that Irish audiences rarely have the chance to see or know about. The channel will also introduce students to these new films which will complement the national syllabus and third level studies.
James Morris, Chairman of Bord Scannán na hÉireann the Irish Film Board said, "With the switch over to digital transmission and consequent increase in the number of terrestrial channels the Irish Film Board saw an opportunity to put forward a proposal for a new channel dedicated to the best of Irish, European and world cinema.
"While the opportunity for an Irish film channel came at relatively short notice it was very encouraging that Minister Eamonn Ryan saw the proposal as a genuine addition to the proposed new transmission platform, a position enthusiastically endorsed by our own minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism Seamus Brennan".
