WASHINGTON—The White House Tuesday accused Russia of taking "provocative actions" against Georgia by moving troops to the breakaway region of Abkhazia and shooting down an unmanned aerial vehicle, increasing the risk of armed confrontation.
"In recent days and weeks, the Russian government has taken what we would call provocative actions which have increased tensions with Georgia," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. "These steps have significantly and unnecessarily heightened tensions in the region."
She urged Russia to reiterate its support for Georgia's sovereignty and for that country to show restraint.
