CLEVELAND-"What I find very amazing is the agility required, the synchronization, how all the themes in the scenery work together so well and the variety" said John Gruner, an editor of Cleveland's biggest newspaper, The Plain Dealer, regarding the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular that was presented for the first time at the Playhouse Square center's State Theater.
"Westerners might find the music a little bit difficult to get used to but the different themes I can follow even though I don't really speak Chinese very well."
John commented on his favorite performance, "Out of the performances here tonight I would rate the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance' first, the 'Nymphs of the Sea' second, and the 'Water Sleeves'. I liked the scenery in that performance mainly because I would like to visit Tibet someday."
"I do have to say if I did any 'Mongolian Bowl Dance' and I got down on my knees spinning I wouldn't be getting up off the floor let alone being able to keep a bowl on my head. I also thought that the 'Nymphs of the Sea' performance was incredible. It is a beautiful art. I can see why the Chinese do so well in gymnastics at the Olympics, it takes a lot of skill and agility."
When asked why he decided to attend the show John, replied "I am here because some friends from Columbus who are from China, kind of decided on a lark at the last minute to attend the show and invited me down."
