CLEVELAND, Ohio—Joshua Peoples took in the Chinese Spectacular at the Playhouse Square Center at the State Theater on Saturday May 3.
Peoples, a student and drama teacher, expressed his admiration for the show during intermission. "It's enjoyable. It's like a magical storybook being played out before your eyes."
When asked about his favorite scene, he replied that the act about the water lilies was his favorite, 'Nymphs of the Sea'. He especially liked the beautiful blue costuming that floated gracefully in the air.
When commenting on the performance 'The Risen Lotus Flower' in which three women are imprisoned for following the Chinese spiritual discipline Falun Gong, Peoples said he learnt a lot. "[It was] a little bit eye opening."
He particularly enjoyed the drums, 'Drummers of the Tang Court' and the female dances in costumes with long sleeves in 'Water Sleeves'. "It was pretty cool. I like the outfits in general," he continued.
When asked what stood out from the perspective of a drama teacher, he pointed out the balance of the characters and the nuances of their movements. "How they stand and move their feet; that stands out the most. That is more from a dance teacher point of view," he said.
Dana Herreid who works in real estate, had traveled from Columbus, Ohio to see the show. She had been lucky enough to get tickets from a neighbor who realized at the last minute that he wouldn't be able to make it. "It seemed like a good opportunity for us," said Herreid.
When asked at intermission what she thought about the show she said: "So far, it's wonderful! All the colors and wonderful dancing and singing, it's very entertaining."
She said that her favorite dance thus far was the one with the water fairies. "I really enjoyed that. The way they move, their ribbons look like waves," she said.
Herreid said she had learnt a lot about the Chinese culture from the evening. "I learnt how much appreciation they have for dancing!"
