SYDNEY—NSW Premier Morris Iemma tonight suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of his own party over the partial sell-off of the state's electricity industry.

An overwhelming majority of delegates at the ALP state conference voted against his plan to privatise parts of state-owned industry.

A vote to oppose privatisation was won 702 votes for and 107 against, at the party's annual conference being held in Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre.

It followed more than two hours of heated debate from delegates, during which a number of government ministers were heckled and booed as they spoke in support of the government's plans.

A number of backbench Labor MPs spoke against any move to privatise the industry.
