CALGARY, Alberta—The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular is sweeping through North America and delighting audiences in the final days of its 2008 global touring season. Sold out in Calgary Friday night, the Spectacular brought vibrant ancient culture to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium through classical Chinese dance, original music and stories.
Ody Ferrandez and Myphuong Tran attended the show together. The two women are friends and both work in the field of finance. Ferrandez works in "accounts payable" for a company and Tran works at a TD bank.
Tran, a Canadian of Chinese heritage, said the show taught her something about true Chinese culture. "Yes, for sure, I learn about passion, and it [the show] makes you want to be a better person. Maybe take part more in Chinese culture, something like that… maybe go to the temple."
She'd like to take her mother to see the Spectacular since her mother speaks only Chinese and a bilingual Chinese and English speaking show is rare in North America.
Ferrandez liked the drumming the best. "The war drums I think it was, with the guys."
"Very beautiful," she said, "The costumes are very nice, very colorful. I love the costumes. I love the drums. I love everything about it. I'll go next year for sure."
