CALGARY—The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular played to a full house for its final show at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Friday evening.
Larry Austin, an electrical designer, was highly impressed by the singers in the show, especially the solo, May You Understand, by soprano Jiang Min.
"That opera song, I want the lyrics because it's fantastic — the words were fantastic. The singers were fantastic and the colours were unreal."
Austin said what impressed him so much about the soprano solo was that "it was about breaking the spell of confusion…it's just really… I was crying, it was really good."
He said his favourite part of the show was "the pretty young ladies," adding again how impressed he was with the singing.
"The singing…the words went right through me, they made me cry…about oppression, breaking through, and giving everyone a way out."
"I was really moved, absolutely awesome."
Dani Ryan, a research analyst who attended the show with a colleague, Arnold Jackson, said during the intermission that such a performance was new to her.
"It's interesting, not like anything I've seen before. I haven't seen a lot of things that are related to Chinese culture, so it's sort of a new experience for me."
Jackson, also a research analyst, said he found the show "quite interesting. It was good; it was a good historical perspective."
What stood out for Jackson were the costumes and the unique, state-of-the-art animated digital backdrops.
"Actually the most vibrant thing for me so far is the costumes and the backsetting, I find that quite eye-catching."
Overall, Jackson said he thought the Spectacular was "well-choreographed, it's got good flow, good energy."
