ST. LOUIS, Missouri—Dr Cecil Wood of the Chancellors Council at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, enjoyed the "excellent performance" and fantastic costumes and choreography at the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular on Thursday evening at the Touhill Performing Arts Center.

Dr Wood particularly enjoyed the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance' saying, "it's very artistic".

She also liked the affects created by the dancers using fans to create an image of the sea in 'Nymphs of the Sea'. "It is amazing how they take simple objects like scarves and fans and make them into very artistic demonstrations, that was fantastic."

Dr Wood saw several Chinese shows when she lived in China, adding: "This is even better than some of the things I've seen before… brilliant, artistic, and spectacular."

She was very impressed by the skill and costumes worn by the dancers. "I really love the colours and dance moves. Everyone is so graceful. I like the agility and artistic nature."

'Bright, Colourful, Entertaining and So Much Energy'

Senator Maida Coleman also attended the Chinese Spectacular on Thursday evening and appreciated the diverse mix of ethnic Chinese cultures displayed in the show. "[It] is very spectacular. It is so bright, colourful, entertaining; so much energy… and to experience things from Mongolian culture and Chinese culture."

Senator Maida was impressed by the skill of the dancers and said, "It is more of a story than just dances put together. I think it is a great form of entertainment and the dancers are so professional and so well trained."

Senator Maida has visited Taiwan and had seen cultural shows before but this is "the first one I've ever seen" of this type and setting. "The lighting, the scenery, the costumes, everything is just very professional, very exciting… high energy excitement."

"It is entertaining but it is also educational." The senator appreciated the message behind the dances that displayed the courage of people who were persecuted for their beliefs in China. "The story lines talk about oppression and certainly that is a sad story. We still today are dealing with oppression … I hope that every culture and every nationality… every country… deserves its freedom in any way, and in every way."

Senator Maida said that some performances in the Chinese Spectacular help people to understand the "sorrowful state of people [who've] been imprisoned" and suffer oppression. "It provides people with lots of opportunity to think about more than just the worlds that they live in."
