Internationally renowned for its blend of African American and modern American dance, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is landing in Toronto for a series of three special performances at the Sony Centre, beginning Friday.

Under the leadership of award-winning choreographer Judith Jamison, who succeeded the Alvin Ailey as the artistic director, the New York-based company has performed more than 200 works over the past few years, featuring the talents of more than 70 choreographers.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary since its establishment by Alvin Ailey in 1958, the company sees its dance as a "medium for honouring the past, celebrating the present, and fearlessly reaching into the future."

In Toronto, each performance will showcase a different set of pieces—although each also features Ailey's signature work Revelations, a vibrant dance rooted in the tradition of blues, spirituals and gospels.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will perform three shows from May 16-17 at the Sony Centre. For more info, see: www.sonycentre.com.
