Teenager Charged Over Oxford Street Murder

LONDON—An east London teenager was due in court on Thursday, charged with stabbing a man to death in Oxford Street this week.

Anthony Costa, 18, is accused of murdering Steven Bigby, 22, outside a McDonald's restaurant near Oxford Circus tube station during the evening rush hour on Monday.

Police said Bigby was stabbed after an argument broke out between two groups of men in one of the capital's busiest shopping areas. A drink was thrown by one of the groups and the "spontaneous" row quickly escalated.

A passing doctor gave Bigby first aid on the pavement. He was taken to a London hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A post mortem found Bigby, from Hackney, north London, had died from a single stab wound to the heart.

Costa, from Walthamstow, east London, is due before Waltham Forest Magistrates Court later on Thursday, Scotland Yard said.

A 19-year-old has been bailed pending further inquiries, a spokesman said in a statement.

The Crown Prosecution Service said on Wednesday that Bigby was facing charges of raping a 16-year-old girl and chemically burning her afterwards to hide the crime.

He had been charged with nine others for the rape of the woman in London in January, a CPS spokeswoman said.

He faced a further charge of causing grievous bodily harm by pouring caustic soda on the victim. Media reports said the chemical was used in an attempt to destroy evidence and caused severe burns.

He had also been due to stand trial in June over the stabbing of a man in north London in October 2006.
