SYDNEY—The federal opposition has hailed as a victory for commonsense the Australian Olympic Committee's (AOC) decision to allow Australian Beijing Games athletes to speak their minds.

Liberal leader Brendan Nelson today welcomed the AOC decision not to prevent athletes making political statements should they wish, and also allow them to write internet blogs.

"That is nothing less than plain commonsense," Dr Nelson said today.

"Australia is a democracy, we're very proud of our sports men and women, and I'm sure they'll do us proud on the field and off the field when they go to Beijing.
