CALGARY—Watching the Chinese Spectacular was a spiritual experience for Cue magazine editor and photographer Ben Tsui, who attended Wednesday's performance at the Southern Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary.

Tsui, a Catholic, said the show was almost like a sermon through "dance, song and words."

"So it feels very calm," he said before contrasting the show with contemporary shows in China.

"I went to the Beijing opera, it's almost, you feel like you're in turmoil. This, you feel very calm, and it's very uplifting."

Tsui said the show presents a revival of traditional Chinese culture.

"The last 50 years you have the idea of revenge, and the villagers have to go beat up the land lords, the owners," said Tsui, referring to the class struggles presented in Chinese performing arts after the Chinese Communist Party came to power almost 60 years ago.

"Here, it's not about revenge, it's about peace, at peace with yourself, and at peace with everyone."

"The point is to make friends, love each other, and have compassion," he said.

After travelling to over 60 cities on four continents, the New York-based Divine Performing Arts dance company will wind up its 2008 international tour one more show in Calgary on Friday, and three more in Edmonton from May 5 to 7.
