CALGARY, Alberta—Brian Wittal, the Mayor of Didsbury, was in awe of Chinese culture after seeing the Spectacular on its opening night at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary April 30.
"Just how much history it is. I didn't realize Chinese have 5000 years, and here in Canada we have only 150 years. We're just starting to scratch the surface, trying to develop our culture and history."
Mr. Wittal said the Spectacular had been a powerful experience.
"It's very impressive, its costuming, the music for one. It's interesting watching the performers in the orchestra because it's something you can't see very often, and the performances themselves.., it's very powerful.
"The drums and the music and everything else, really it's a show that .. 5000 years of culture! .., it's very unique."
Mr. Wittal commented that the background information provided throughout the show had enabled him to learn more about Chinese culture.
"Oh yes, some of the stories … it's nice to have them talk about each one before the performance, to explain it to you a little bit so that you get a better understanding of it." He said he liked the drums and the format of the show, adding that he was particularly impressed with soprano Pi-ju Huang,
"..it's a very nice touching mixture. That's what I liked too, the lady that sang, it was very powerful."
