ST. LOUIS, MO—Dr Fred Chu, a neuro-ophthalmologist, and his wife Anita, a neurologist, said they were having "a wonderful time" at the Chinese Spectacular, currently playing at the Touhill Performing Arts Center in St. Louis.

"We appreciate seeing performances showing our heritage," said Fred. "I'm of Chinese origin, my parents are from Guangzhou. We are starved of Chinese culture."

The Chus like to dance and have won dozens of national student competitions in ballroom dancing. Chu said they appreciated the dance rhythms and the costumes worn by the performers.

"Each dance captures the mood of the theme. Water fairies ['Nymphs of the Sea'] was most striking. The Mongolian tea cups ['Mongolian Bowl Dance'] demonstrates poise and the moves are complicated and the fact that nobody dropped the bowls."

Anita said the dancers in the piece, 'Nymphs of the Sea', were "very creative the way they used the fans — the waves creating the illusion. The backdrops created changes in scenery that complements the dancing. I give the show a ten."

"We think the young people in the show are doing a wonderful job here," said Fred. "The young people are carrying on with the beautiful Chinese dancing. It's good to have this go from one generation to the next."

He said "every chance we get to see Chinese culture we take it," adding that his son, who was born in the United States, is learning Chinese.

"There is a need to go back to our roots. The younger generation are much more confident. This show can help encourage diversity...develop friendship and culture."
