CALGARY—Coming from an arts background, Steven Lapt said he knows good talent when he sees it, and in his opinion, the Chinese Spectacular "put together a great talent pool."
"I think the performance from the baritone to the soprano right down to the dancers was just a show that you couldn't get anywhere in the world," said Lapt, an analyst with a Calgary-based energy company.
Lapt, who attended the Spectacular at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday evening, said the lyrics in the solo performances present "elements of Chinese culture."
He said he particularly enjoyed the piece, The Risen Lotus Flower, which depicts the persecution of three Falun Gong practitioners.
"It's a great picture of the injustice that China is currently forcing upon its people," he said.
Lapt, who is also involved with political campaigns from all three levels of government, called Chinese consulate interference in trying to stop the Spectacular from showing in Calgary "unfortunate," but said he's glad that the organizers "persevered" and held the show.
Last week, Tourism Calgary and Travel Alberta pulled out of their sponsorship deal with the Calgary Chinese Spectacular after they were contacted by the Chinese consulate.
"I think any interference from a government, a foreign entity in a foreign country interfering in free speech, is just unheard of," Lapt said.
