BUCHAREST, Romania—The Bucharest National Theatre, the most prestigious theatre in Romania was once more the venue for the Chinese Spectacular show on April 8.
The globe trotting Divine Performing Arts Company was eager to bring its traditional Chinese cultural show with a potpourri of scenes from China's 5,000-year history to the Romanian people.
Dan Gavrila, Director of the Association for European Cooperation DOR, which seeks to restore traditional culture in post-communist Romania, was among the audience. Gavrila was delighted to have seen the show and said, "I thought the show was great. What amazed me most were the backdrop and the special effects. Yes, the Chinese cultural dance presentation is different from what we see in Europe, but both make a whole, because they both belong to the world's people, to the world's culture."
Gavrila was so enthused about the show that he was going to tell his family, friends and acquaintances about it and ask them to hurry and buy tickets.
"You can be sure that I will recommend this show to everyone. I will tell them about the emotions one experiences when watching the show and the feelings the show evokes. To me, in the West, one lays much importance on the physical movements and the body of a person, while for Asian, thinking comes first," he said.
In Romania, the Chinese embassy attempted to pressure the theatre director and the Ministry of Culture into cancelling the performance, even after the show's very warmly received premier on April 7. Similar types of scenarios have occurred in virtually every city where the New York-based company has toured.
Gavrila did not think it proper for the Chinese Embassy to pressure venues throughout the world to cancel contracts with this Dance Company and said, "This is absolutely wrong. China should become more democratic. I think that the same should also happen in Tibet. Tibet is the spiritual center. Monasteries, churches and culture should always be kept alive. This is the reason why the Chinese regime wants to destroy it. The regime wants to destroy the mind and spirit. They know exactly what to attack. They know what they want to eliminate. Communism is generally bad, because it wants to destroy culture, spirit, knowledge and religion."
He continued that "this show helped him reflect on much, such as what actually is important to the individual, what we do from day to day, what we think about day in and day out and how the time passes quickly."
The Association for European Cooperation DOR is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring traditional Romanian culture, and traditional cultures worldwide.
