BUCHAREST, Romania—The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular experienced one of its most enthusiastic audiences ever at the Bucharest National Theatre in Romania on Tuesday night.
The delighted audience stood and cheered, bringing the performers back for three curtain calls.
On business in Bucharest for just two days, Nicole Conrad, senior department manager for a large company in Düsseldorf, Germany, caught the show as she travelled through town.
"I'm here with a friend, he's a colleague of mine and he invited me to come to see the show," said Conrad, adding that she thoroughly enjoyed it.
"It was a wonderful and fantastic show. It's very good. Everything was perfect. I'm not so familiar with culture of China but I have the feeling that somebody put very good feelings into this show. It was very nice."
She said she especially enjoyed the drumming acts, "Victory Drums" and "Drummers of the Tang Court."
"The drummers were very good and also the "Nymphs of the Sea" was nice."
Conrad found out about attempts to have the show cancelled by the Chinese embassy only a few minutes before it began and the news shocked her. "…it's unbelievable that it's happening," she said.
The Spectacular has faced interference in numerous cities by the Chinese communist regime which encourages theatres and officials to ignore or condemn the show. The New York-based Divine Performing Arts has been heralded for its contribution to the global renaissance of Chinese culture.
"I think that it's free of any politics and I have the feeling that they really are bringing the culture back, the Chinese culture. I go with a good feeling because I learned a little bit about the Chinese culture and I'm really impressed about the colours, clothes, music."
