The color pink truly went a long way on this stage—into the drum set, the microphone, the eye shadow, lighting, wardrobe, checkered flooring and all the adorable eight year olds with pink fluorescent wands in the audience, waving them about.
Unfortunately, outside of the initial flash-glam, the Avril Lavigne concert at the Air Canada Centre on April 7, lacked any depth to make it memorable. Add on a few confusing moments where Avril disappeared off the stage while a video of her played as a few of her dancers filled the gap.
To her credit, she was poised and very well rehearsed as the DVD crew filmed her live. She's a pretty girl with definite ability. Obviously she's made it this far but it just didn't shine beyond the glam. Despite her punk image, the performance came off contrived and awkward as she did her model's strut about the stage. It's getting stale and unless Avril wants to be the next solo spice girl, it's time for an image overhaul.
Opening act was Boys Like Girls. Crowd pleasers yes. But a more appropriate name for them would have been the Banner Boys as their banner was the size of the entire backdrop. Huge! Maybe their music will catch up to the brand, the little glimpse last night showed possibility.
