BUCHAREST, Romania—Best friends Bibica Mihaila and Stefana Constantin took an unaccustomed taxi ride to see the Chinese Spectacular in Bucharest. Ms. Michaila is a retired geologist and Ms. Constantin a former artisan, who once handcrafted fine Russian rugs. Constantin rarely leaves her house unless someone else picks her up in a car, yet she made the effort to travel to the theater by taxi tonight.
Stefana Constantin was so moved by the young dancers that she wept. "They were so little and very, very good. I cried." She said she cried "… out of love for them. And the boys also had passion in the dance, which I felt."
Mihaila was strongly impressed by the dances and the erhu. She said it was very beautiful, so it was very important that the show had visited Europe. The two sat in the third row so that they could see everything. Mihaila saw Chinese performances when she was nine years old and again when she was seventeen. Constantin had never seen a Chinese show before. "They open the soul to each other for people to be good, so the message is good," said Constantin, taking the reporter's hand. "We give each other our hands so it's very important.
"The dancing, music, drums, and the stories were very impressive. And the spiritual message, the show speaks about truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. Now I understand. We have to remember to be like this: good."
Constantin's said to the reporter, "You are welcome here, to smile like this. You are very welcome here. I feel like I have known you for a lifetime, like [you were] a Romanian girl. We enjoyed a lot this night. I am a little ill, and I barely came, but now I do not care about anything. It was very beautiful.
"The universe united us all tonight, united us. This thing is beautiful. This thing is beautiful!"
