BUCHAREST, Romania—Divine Peforming Arts chose the Bucharest National Theater, the most prestigious theater in Romania, as a venue to bring to the Romanian people a sampling from China's 5,000-year history, the Chinese Spectacular.
The Chinese Spectacular played before a full house on its opening night. The audience showed their appreciation of the show with a standing ovation and 3 curtain calls.
Apostol Florentina, her hausband, and their little baby had come to the show, since they had heard that this performance was different from what they had ever seen.
"I received an invitation. I was also curious to see a different show than our classic Romanian acts," said Florentina during intermission.
She liked what she had seen up to intermission and said, "It [the show] was very nice. Dancing is my passion, especially when the dance is different from Romanian dance. I was impressed by all the scenes, the dances, and the costumes."
This was the first time Romanians were exposed to classical Chinese traditions in their country.
Florentina said, "The show exposed us to something different from Romanian dance, and I think that it will continue to be successful. We will come for sure to the next shows."
When asked if she thought that others would be as receptive to something so different from what they are used to, she said, "It depends on each person's willingness to accept something different. I think all they have to do is to be willing to come [to the show], and they will be favorably impressed for certain."
Valentin Saculescu, another member of the audience also wanted to share with us her thoughts about the performance.
"I loved the show. But the music was somehow different. It adapted thematically to something we had experienced in Romania. It brings us memories of our old times [the communist times]—yes, it is about what is happening in China."
She could see that the performance was a sampling of ancient and modern culture, and agreed that one cannot separate them and cannot exclude the repressions, "Yes, that is right. We know what is happening in China, because we were also under communism."
When asked about her favourite scene, she said, "The DRUMS! … their sound … and this is probably because of the Chinese belief that drums bring luck. Very beautiful show."
