BRISBANE, Australia—"The drums, the drums!" was the spontaneous response from David and Mary Wong when they were asked which performance was their favourite after the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular finished in Brisbane on April 8, 2008.
Mary took stock of her experiences a moment later and said: "Actually, I really enjoyed the most colourful performances. You can really feel the emotions of the performers — and the costumes. I liked the Mongolian dance ['Mongolian Bowl Dance'] as well. That was spectacular." David agreed that he had enjoyed it all too.
Neither of them could go past the singing in the performances, however. When asked about the singing, Mary gave a deep sigh and said: "Oh, the singing, it's just great … It's surprising, the baritone's voice is just … Oh, they all make fantastic voices!"
David completed her thoughts: "And that lady that was playing the piano, she should be given more credit! She was just in the background, but she is really good. And I liked the lighting in the background."
A Very Good Show
George, a labourer from Mackay who is currently in Brisbane visiting his friends, said: "I think it's very good, very pretty. The costumes are very good. A very good show."
His two favourite performances were the drums and those depicting the persecution of Falun Gong. When asked why, he explained: "Well, my daughter is a Falun Gong practitioner and I sort of understand it a little bit. I've taken a bit of an interest in it because of her interest, so I do understand it a little."
He also enjoyed the singing. Apart from what he has learned from his daughter about Chinese culture, he said: "I think we get an education of the history of China [in the show]. It goes back 5000 years!"
