BRISBANE, Australia—On Tuesday April 8, 2008, Mino Ueji brought her seven-year-old daughter Rion to the Brisbane Convention Centre to see the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular. This is the second time Mrs Ueji and little Rion have seen the show.

"I think it's fantastic. I think the dancing and the singing is wonderful. Last year, I came here to watch. That is why I asked my friend to get a ticket for my daughter and I, because my daughter really likes it."

Mrs Ueji felt a connection to the cultural dance and music displayed in the Chinese Spectacular because of their shared heritage.

She described feeling a sense of calm as she watched the Chinese Spectacular. She particularly liked the 'Drummers of the Tang Court', 'Lightness and Grace', and 'Victory Drums'. Little Rion expressed that her favourite was the erhu, played exquisitely by soloist Mei Xuan, who performed 'Predestined Relationship'.

Music that moves the soul

Another member of the audience who enjoyed the erhu was Lizzy Bond, a journalist, English language teacher and Tai Chi instructor. Ms Bond travelled over 2˝ hours from Byron Bay with a busload of people to attend the Chinese Spectacular.

Having a keen interest in Chinese culture, Ms Bond found the performances to be "over the top and colourful, and visually amazing." Speaking of the erhu performance, Ms Bond said: "Music is emotional. So we are sitting here watching this visual spectacle and the story, and reading using our minds, but that's emotional…everyone responds to that."

Ms Bond would tell her friends who haven't seen the Chinese Spectacular to come along "if you want to see something really different, a bit like musical theatre ... something visually amazing and also have a real taste of Chinese culture".
