BRISBANE, Australia—Julie, a psychology student who traveled from Toowoomba to see the Chinese Spectacular, said: "It was different from what I had expected. It had strong spiritual overtones and messages of value. I like that." She also liked the dancing, costumes, and the evening as a whole.
She thought the parts of the show including Falun Gong were interesting and valuable. "The show, it forced you to look at the different meaning of life, and values and the people," she explained, "not just the beautiful costumes and dancing."
Emma and Susie from Gowel Billboard advertising company, were also in the audience, having received tickets to the show from their boss.
"[It's] very different from what I have seen before," said Emma. She thought the costumes were beautiful, and commented that the Spectacular is her favorite performing arts show.
"The programs are interesting, lots of singing, drumming, dancing. I didn't know what to expect when I first came here, we had no background knowledge about the Chinese history."
Emma was delighted and surprised by what the evening had to offer. "The backdrops are amazing," she said, "They did not waste time changing things—very quick, lovely. I get the message. It was great."
"It is probably a lot bigger than I expected," said travel insurance sales person, Phoebe Bellert, who came to see the Chinese Spectacular in Brisbane on Tuesday with her father. Like many in the audience, she and her father were pleasantly pleased by the uniqueness of the show.
"It's very unusual the way they have used the projection on the back screen rather than sets ... It's nice to watch other cultures and get a taste for that," said her father, Alan.
Marijke Bassani, an Indigenous Australian from Cape York studying at Griffith University on a scholarship program was also among the audience. "I don't really know much about Chinese culture, and so I suppose it's kind of like a different way of acquiring knowledge [for me] ... it is very different and everything is all about order and structure and elegance."
Marijke admitted that she had not seen many performing arts shows, but hoped to see more in the future.
