BRISBANE, Australia—Young Indigenous student artist Loretta Lenoy attended the Chinese Spectacular together with friends to experience and learn about another culture through an educational performing arts show. "Just the Chinese culture and how powerful it is," said Loretta, about her interest in seeing the show.
When asked if she knew much about Chinese culture, Loretta answered: "No, but I always had this interest in the actual culture itself. And I find it really interesting." Loretta found the body movements of the classical Chinese dances especially interesting, stating: "It's really cool."
She was extremely impressed by the visual backdrops. "Oh, I loved it. That was cool. I reckon...it makes it more interesting, like seeing the background and how it changes colours and [how] they add their little things to the background." Her friend, Marijke Bassani adds: "It's almost life-like."
Loretta's favourite piece was "the tea one", referring to the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance' in which the Divine Performing Arts company depict the post-feast tradition of dancing with bowls ever-so-carefully balanced atop their heads. "It was so colourful."
Loretta would describe the show to her friends as "very colourful [with] lots of patterns. You see a lot of patterns..." Overall, Loretta was really impressed with the intricate costumes, particularly in the 'Lightness and Grace' fan dance, the production lighting and the dancers' well-timed performance.
