BRISBANE, Australia—Lei Mei, a Chinese living in Taiwan, brought her Australian friend Mary with her to see the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular.
Lei Mei said: "I think all the performers are really well organised and they look really fantastic. I get the message of the show because I am from Chinese background. I am Chinese from Taiwan, so I know the Chinese government in Mainland China. They are very cruel and have no human rights at all. It's sad and today I am here to support, as you say, the bringing back of the Chinese traditional culture.
"I think the show is trying to raise awareness of the people's lives in China. China has just no freedom at all. It's is very sad. The Chinese people dare not say anything, because if you speak out you will have a lot of trouble, and you could be put in prison, so it is very sad."
Lei Mei said: "Yes, I think this show, although its only two hours, it was very easy to understand and see the message... If I say a thousand words, it is very hard to draw a picture, but for my friend Mary, seeing the show, it has made it easier for her to know the real story about ancient Chinese culture."
Lei Mei's friend Mary, a retired nurse, had never seen true Chinese culture before. She said: "I've just seen news occasionally about the situation in China. But my friend Lei Mei had interpreted for me during the show each performance spanning the 5000 years. I'll go and study it a lot more closely now. It is so interesting."
