From traditional to contemporary culture, or as a modern form of artistic expression, dance is a visual art form easily enjoyed by all ages.
Year after year, spectators are wowed by brilliant choreography in a variety of styles, from ballet to burlesque to ballroom to break dancing – and that's just the beginning.
Productions that use dance as a feature can evoke an array of emotions, often unique to each audience member. Watching different styles of dance can take you from one extreme to another. Chinese classical dance can create a majestic experience drawn straight from divine culture, while traditional African dance will give a vibe of tribal antiquity.
The many different cultures around the world provide an almost endless source of dance genres. Although most cultures enjoy dance as entertainment and art, for some ethnicities, it is a means of celebration and a way of life.
Australia's own history includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait dance creating an integral part of life within Indigenous communities.
Getting involved in dance
There are two main ways of becoming involved in the world of dance. The first way is to observe by attending musicals, dance productions, ballets or one of the many varieties of dance competitions just waiting for a captive audience.
Another way to embrace the art of dance is to step right onto centre stage and be part of the show, or at least learn how to be a part of the show. Dance lessons of all different styles are fast becoming a way to socialise, have fun and keep fit.
The styles of dance classes on offer today are so extensive that it might initially be a challenge to narrow down exactly the style you are interested in. The diversity of styles spreads far beyond the traditional styles of ballet, tap and jazz dancing, and includes hip-hop, contemporary, ballroom, salsa, African and Irish.
The popular dance show So you think you can dance? is currently screening its first season on Australian television. The concept of the show starts with a nationwide audition to pick the crème de le crème of Australia's finest dancers. The dancers show talent from a wide range of dance styles. The top 20 dancers are then partnered up and given choreography by some of Australia's finest choreographers. Eventually, it will come down to one winner, as individuals are voted off by a collaboration of judges and the voting viewers.
Along with the great entertainment value it provides, it has also sparked interest in more people getting involved in the world of dance.
If you think you can dance or would just like to have fun trying, check out your local dance studio for some adult dance classes. Some health clubs and gyms offer dance-style classes, or you could find a workshop specialising in a more traditional style.
