NEW YORK—May is Bike month in New York City, but it kicked off a week early last Saturday with the 10th annual blessing of the bikes ceremony at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on the Upper West Side, where riders could bring their bikes into the church for a dousing of holy water and some kind words from the Reverend Thomas Miller.
Two-wheeled adventures continue Friday night with a moonlight ride through Central Park, starting at the Columbus Circle entrance at 10 p.m. and ending at 12 a.m. The 4th annual tour de Brooklyn will be on Sunday, May 25.
It's a popular ride through many of the picturesque neighborhoods in Brooklyn (there will also be a Tour de Queens in June and a Tour de Bronx in October).
The diverse listing of events on the calendar includes a workshop on how to fix your bike on Thursday May 1 at 73 Morton St. in the West Village, and a screening of an award winning short film, "A History of the Bicycle," at the Brooklyn Art Museum on Friday May 9.
The 17th Annual Bike Month NYC is presented by Transportation Alternatives and the New York City Department of Transportation, Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of Health. More info including a calendar of events is at: http://bikemonthnyc.org
