VANCOUVER—Margaret Johnson, president of the non-profit Solutions Credit Counseling Services Inc., attended the opening night of the Chinese Spectacular at Surrey's Bell Performing Arts Centre on Friday.

She was highly impressed by the show, which portrays the true traditional Chinese culture.

"Wonderful, I love it, it's so beautiful," said Johnson. "The dancers are fantastic and the story is very interesting. The costumes are spectacular, just spectacular. I can't get over how beautiful those costumes are."

She also enjoyed the classical Chinese dance performances, something the Spectacular has become renowned for.

"The dancers are excellent dancers. They're all in tune to each other, they flow together. It's very interesting to watch it. I wasn't aware of a lot of the traditional Chinese dancing. It's so graceful and so elegant. I've never been to anything like this before and I would definitely come again."

The multicultural aspect of the Spectacular impressed her.

"I think it is very interesting. I think it's really nice the way they've done the show in both English and Chinese, very interesting that they've done that. I like that. That's an excellent touch."

Johnson also commented on interference by the Chinese consulate in Calgary and the pressure tactics they used to prevent two travel agencies, the Travel Alberta and Tourism Calgary, from sponsoring the show — something they had previously agreed to do. The Spectacular is scheduled to play in Calgary at the end of the month.

"This show has absolutely nothing to do with politics. It's just about beauty and entertainment, nothing to do with politics."
