SEATTLE-Amid the beauty of the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington, State Representative Bob Hasegawa enjoyed the opening performance of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular. Bob Hasegawa is the Representative for the 11th District in Washington State.
"The show so far has been fabulous," he said, "I love the beautiful costumes—just incredible, the colors and how they are choreographed. I really like the wavey thing with the water dance ['Nymphs of the Sea'], very spectacular! Watching them, very athletic, doing what they do is very inspiring."
Representative Hasegawa's favorite remains the "Nymphs of the Sea." "I really like that water one, because it was so striking, when the curtain rose and you see the blue fabrics all [moving like waves] ... I think that was my favorite one."
"The Chinese culture that I have experienced is just in Seattle. I grew up close to the international districts. So Chinatown in Seattle is kind of where I grew up.
"But I had the opportunity to go visit Taiwan last year and I really had a fabulous time, we learned so much," he continued. "We actually got a special performance from the, I think it's the University of Performing Arts in Taipei. We saw the Chinese acrobats do a special performance and then we had a performance of the Chinese Opera. I can't remember the name of the story but it was fabulous. I learned so much by going to visit and developed this great respect for ancient Chinese culture. I'm really glad to see that here in the United States we're getting to experience it, because we haven't had that opportunity here."
When asked if he had learned anything new from this show, he said, "From this particular show? Yes, I'm trying to process it, the costumes were just so spectacular. I guess I've never seen Chinese dance and music performed this way before so yeah, I am learning that it's actually more modern than I thought it would be ... I just came in with sort of an open mind and it's fascinating to watch it."
