MUNICH, Germany—Wolf Dietrich Schilderer, an economics engineer with great appreciation for Chinese music and culture, was among the audience during the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular European Tour in Munich.

"It is very gratifying to see many aspects of traditional Chinese culture here. This is true for the stage sets, as well as the performance, the music, the dancing and the movements," Mr. Shilderer said.

"It is too bad, of course, that the singers each had only one opportunity to present their solos. I kept hoping with every singer that I would hear a little more of them. It would have been nice."

"Perhaps we can have a longer performance later on because here in Munich, we never have concerts with Chinese singers. I think it would be something in which we would find an appreciative audience here in Munich."

He said, "I'd like to say something about the stage sets and the choreography, especially the costumes. All of it was a feast for the eyes in whatever they presented tonight. They put great value on presenting beautiful images and poses. It was really very beautiful; I remember especially the first set with the beautiful spring colors and the growing plants after the intermission. It is not just about nature; they also sing and dance about mythology, and also about the perseverance of human beings. I can understand that this probably has to do with Chinese cultural identity."

"I was already familiar with the tonalities and the typical melodies and harmonies and I have been to many concerts. This is why it is all so familiar to me. For us, it seems remarkable that there is no break with the past in Chinese music like what happened in European music in every century. In Europe we have had a new musical direction almost every century and the old stuff gets thrown out. It is good to hear the traditional Chinese music and tradition."
