MUNICH, Germany—At the final performance of the Chinese Spectacular in Europe at the Prince Regent Theater in Munich on Saturday, Johanna Zehetmeier was one of many delighted audience members.
"I enjoyed the show…awesome. It was something different. As a pure Chinese show, this was the first one I have ever seen," said Zehetmeier, who works as a notary.
"I enjoyed the entire show. The costumes were beautiful, also the colors. The music of course is a little unfamiliar. The music instrument [the erhu] I have heard for the first time today – I found this instrument also very interesting." A real crowd-pleaser, the erhu is a two-stringed Chinese instrument, known for its wide range of notes and mellow, haunting sound.
"I will also get some information about Falun Gong, because I have not heard anything about that until today," said Zehetmeier, adding that it's fitting that a contemporary injustice in China, the persecution of Falun Gong, be depicted in the form of performing arts.
"Art does reflect reality. One can experience that art in painting as well as in the theater. I have experienced it in this form for the very first time, but I also think that this is alright. Why shouldn't art reflect reality?"
